Ayrlawn Local Park – Accessibility Improvements

Project Description

In accordance with ADA requirements, Montgomery Parks is proposing to install various upgrades to improve accessibility to various amenities within the park.  The upgrades will consist primarily of new parking spaces, walkways and support features. Additionally, Montgomery Parks will install drainage improvements to minimize the flooding and pooling of water in the area near the playground. The installation and completion of all improvements began in the summer of 2015 and will be completed in the summer of 2016.


In accordance with Montgomery Parks Settlement Agreement with the US Department of Justice, improvements to various amenities within the park are required to be performed.

A community meeting was held on April 14, 2015 to review and discuss the proposed plans for improvement. One outcome of the meeting was that Montgomery Parks review additional options for access, as well as to further coordinate with Montgomery County Government on possible upgrades to the property leased to the YMCA by Montgomery County Government. A second community meeting was held July 28th in which various options were outlined and discussed. The scope of the improvements for Phase 2 was accepted by the community.

The proposed improvements at/near softball Field # 2, Phase 1, were accepted by the community and construction commenced during 2015.

Phase 2 improvements will consist of the addition of several new regular parking spaces and an accessible space in front of the YMCA, a new ramp/entrance into the YMCA, a walkway extension from the upgraded parking lot to various amenities such as the playground and tennis courts, and stormwater management/drainage upgrades consisting of a bio-swale and piping. Improvements to water quality and a reduction in ponded water in/near the playground are expected.

Status/Project Update

Phase 1 construction is currently underway and should be completed in the spring of 2016. Construction of the remaining improvements are scheduled to begin during the spring of 2016.
