Project Description

This project provides a new recreational park on 51 acres of land located on Airpark Road, just north of Muncaster Mill Road. The site is shared with the County’s new Animal Shelter, which is located on 7 acres along Muncaster Mill Road.

Background

A facility plan was prepared and approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board in 2001. Proposed features of the original plan included four fields (two adult baseball and two youth baseball), with a central plaza containing a building to house a press box, restrooms, and vending area. The plan also included a playground, lighted basketball court, two picnic shelters, in-line skating rink, and trailhead parking to access an existing natural surface trail located just north of park property.

The Montgomery County Planning Board issued a request for expressions of interest to entertain proposals from potential partners who expressed interest in developing and operating the park. Several partnership proposals were considered, but the Board decided to proceed with the funded County project. The Board approved an updated facility plan to address current recreational needs and environmental constraints on July 22, 2010. The updated park design includes three lighted rectangular fields, one with artificial turf and two with natural turf, one lighted adult baseball field, a restroom/pavilion, playground, half-basketball court, trail network, and parking. The current plan preserves the majority of the forested area adjacent to the Pope Farm Creek. The project is in the Upper Rock Creek Special Protection Area, and the Final Water Quality Plan was approved on December 1, 2011.

Status/Project Update

Park construction is ongoing. A Soft Opening occurred in April 2018, with three permitted fields.  The Grand Opening is currently scheduled for June of 2018.
