Project Description

Construction is completed for the renovation of Evans Parkway Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring. The five-acre park located along Georgia Avenue and Cascade Place was expanded to include an additional 2.46 acres.

A facility planning study was conducted and a plan for the park was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on January 18, 2007.  Features of the plan include two half-court basketball courts, open lawn areas, tennis courts, a picnic area and shade shelter, paved area for wheeled play, parallel parking spaces, replacement of playground equipment, boardwalk and paved pedestrian loop trail, rain gardens and landscaping.  In addition, this project includes removal of an existing concrete stormwater management channel and restoration of this area as a natural stream channel.  The project also partnered with the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County to hire an artist, who worked with the community to design interactive artwork.

Status/Project Update

Evans Parkway Neighborhood Park has become one of the first pilot projects in the nation to be certified under the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) Rating System for sustainable site design, construction and maintenance. The project was awarded a three-star rating in 2015 by SITES, a voluntary national rating system and guidelines for sustainable landscapes of all types, with or without buildings. The project is one of 46 to achieve certification in the pilot program and one of only ten projects to achieve a three-star rating or higher. Click here to view additional information on SITES and view this page for information about the project.
