Student Service Learning Opportunities

Montgomery Parks is offering Student Service Learning (SSL) Volunteer Events for students. These events will allow students to get outside, help with exciting projects in the parks, and earn SSL Hours. Projects will include stream & park cleanups, natural surface trail workdays, and others. We are grateful for all the student volunteers who contribute thousands of hours of service to projects and events in our parks every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can my child earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours?

There are several opportunities for student volunteers in parks. As an approved SSL host agency, all student opportunities must be preapproved by MCPS and the Montgomery County Volunteer Center. Only the preapproved options will provide you with SSL hours. If you require a lot of hours over a short time frame, please understand that it is only sometimes possible for us to accommodate you.

What is the minimum age requirement to volunteer?

Each job lists a minimum age – but to volunteer without parental supervision, you must be 14 years old, and some jobs have a higher age limit. Those younger than 14 may join a parent or guardian in our Family Volunteer program. For opportunities that allow volunteers under 14, an approved legal guardian must also volunteer and register separately.
