Project Description
This project provides a new recreational park on 51 acres of land located at the intersection of Muncaster Mill Road and Airpark Road near Derwood. The property consists of undeveloped land and church property that was purchased by the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission. A portion of the proposed park site is reserved for a County animal shelter.
Background
A facility plan was prepared and approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board in 2001. Proposed features of the plan included four fields (two adult baseball and two youth baseball), with a central plaza containing a building to house a press box, restrooms, and vending area. The plan also included a playground, lighted basketball court, two picnic shelters, in-line skating rink, and trailhead parking to access an existing natural surface trail located just north of park property.
The Montgomery County Planning Board issued a request for expressions of interest to entertain proposals from potential partners who expressed interest in developing and operating the park. Several partnership proposals were considered, but the Board decided to proceed with the funded County project. The project is now under final design, and is being updated to address current recreational needs and environmental constraints.
Status/Project Update
Final design is currently underway. An updated concept plan was presented to the community in April at a public meeting - see project renderings and powerpoint slides from the meeting displayed above. The water quality plan is currently being prepared, and will be presented jointly with the County’s Animal Shelter Project to the Planning Board for approval on July 22, 2010.
