Project Description
Notice: M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks Begins Evans Parkway Neighborhood Park Renovation
Construction has begun to renovate the Evans Parkway Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring, with completion anticipated in the spring of 2014. The five-acre park located along Georgia Avenue and Cascade Place will be expanded to include an additional 2.46 acres. Features will include basketball courts, new playground equipment and a natural stream and boardwalk.
Background
A facility planning study was conducted and a plan for the park was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on January 18, 2007. Features of the plan include two half-court basketball courts, parallel parking spaces, replacement of playground equipment, boardwalk and paved pedestrian loop trails, a shelter, rain gardens and landscaping. In addition, this project includes removal of an existing concrete stormwater management channel and restoration of this area as a natural stream channel. The project was approved and funded for detailed design and construction by the Montgomery County Council.
Status/Project Update
A new consultant was hired in November 2009 to prepare the “Detailed Design” and construction documents. This project has three exciting features: First, the concrete lined channel will be removed and replaced with a natural stream, wider flood plain, beautiful boardwalk, new bridge, landscaping and interpretive signs. Second, this project has been selected as a pilot study for “Sustainable Site Initiative” which is a similar setup as LEED for building design. Third, an artist has been hired through a nationwide competition with the help of Arts and Humanities of Montgomery County. The Artist will work with our consultant integrating the artwork with the park design rather than installing an isolated sculpture. The construction document design is at 95% and is partially posted on this web site.
A community meeting was held on May 4, 2010 to collect additional feedback from the community. The construction documents are 100% complete. Attached are some of the major sheets from the construction documents, 95% complete.
