Blockhouse Point Conservation Park Trails
Within Blockhouse Point Conservation Park are numerous trails that are part of the Civil War complex for which the park is named. They were once used as a wartime transportation system for supplies. The park boasts unmatched views of the Potomac Valley, mature upland forests, and historic Civil War ruins
Trail Information Activities: Hiking, biking, horseback riding
Location: 14750 River Road, Darnestown, MD. Located between the C&O Canal to the south and Esworthy Road to the north and is bisected by MD Route 190, River Road.
Trail length/surface: All 7+ miles of trails are natural surface.
Trail characteristics: The majority of the trails are designated “hiking only”. The rest are designated for “hiker/equestrian”. Biking in this Park is prohibited except for the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail which travels south from Esworthy Rd.and along the eastern edge of the park across a bridge to connect with the C&O Canal towpath. The towpath is owned and maintained by the National Park Service.
Access and parking: There are two gravel lots. Both are located along the south side of River Road. The larger lot can hold approximately 25 cars and two to three horse trailers. There is a park sign at the lot entrance and a kiosk located at the back of the lot with a map of the park’s trails. A second, smaller, lot is located at the western edge of the park and will hold only a few cars.
