Grades 2-5: Two hour naturalist lead program, plus time for outdoor lunch and free play
Wild Life Cycles
All living things move through life cycles. Students will compare and contrast life cycles during different seasons, from insects (spring), amphibians (spring), birds (fall, spring), mammals (winter), and trees (all year round). We’ll look at the relationships between weather, food availability, and the animals that call Montgomery County home.
Habitats and Ecosystems of Montgomery County
Explore a variety of habitats, from the Cabin John Creek watershed to forests, meadows, and wetlands. Students will investigate the four elements of a good habitat, compare and contrast habitats and consider energy flow through these ecosystems. They will consider seasonal and human impacts, both positive and negative, on local habitats and the watershed.
Walk the Watershed
Follow the rain down the hills, across the meadow, and into Cabin John Creek and learn about the human and weather impacts on our resident watershed. We’ll learn about soil, runoff, rocks, and erosion. Make connections that tie Cabin John Creek to the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, and beyond.
Students will experience the daily life of Eastern Woodland Indians as they lived in our area over 1,000 years ago. We will explore where they found shelter, how they prepared food, what they wore, and children’s roles. We’ll discover the importance of certain plants and animals, and how deeply the Woodland Indians were connected to the natural world. Learn how they obtained tools, clothing and food from plants, animals, bones and stones.
Apple Cider Pressing
Join us in this one hour program as we put the squeeze on some apples! Learn the history and biology of apples in America. Discover the art of cider making and try a taste of this traditional American drink.
Available: October through mid-November
Cabin to the Past
Go back in history to experience how people lived without electricity or running water, and how they interacted with and relied on their environment. Explore how settlers used natural resources such as native plants and the wildlife that were critical to their subsistence living.
