The mission of AHFP is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the late 1960s.

Our vision is to cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation for our diverse agricultural heritage by authentically sharing stories and illustrating how agriculture effortlessly incorporates various disciplines. Through careful preservation, we aim to accurately reflect our history, aspiring to be the foremost educational resource for learners of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs.

At the Agricultural History Farm Park, we aim to bring to life Montgomery County’s rich agricultural history and farming practices from the 18th to the 20th centuries. We provide engaging experiences for Montgomery County residents, seekers, and enthusiasts of history and science. By bridging the past and present to foster a deep connection to our agricultural heritage and the environment. This scenic 455-acre park features rolling hills, open fields, an apple orchard, and a variety of farm animals. Get a unique perspective on the county’s rich farming heritage while visiting barns, historic buildings, a modern farming activity center, and other facilities at the park. The mission of AHFP is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the 1960s.

We currently are not offering guided group tours but look forward to restarting them soon.

Spring Programs Available!

Registration for 2026 Spring Programs is open now! We have lots of exciting new programs for you this season, from fresh Homeschool History classes to nature hikes and new activities for our Little Farmers. Introducing Junior Historians!

Step into the past and discover history in a fun, immersive way with Junior Historians! This program series is designed for ages 5-8, and invites young learners to explore history through interactive activities and playful discovery. Each session combines historical learning with practical, hands-on activities that bring history to life. Each class will cover a different theme, with a special emphasis on the Farm Park’s unique history, encouraging children to learn by touching, trying, and experiencing real tools, techniques, and traditions from long ago. Your child will leave with a richer understanding of history and a greater appreciation for the simple joys of farm life.

This Spring, we have an exciting set of themes for the children to learn about, including Early Trades, Maryland Food History, The American Revolution, Historical Games, Farm Animals, and Puppetry! Space is limited, so register today to secure your spot!

History-Based Programs

Spring is here, and so are lots of new and returning programs here at the Farm Park! From Homeschool History and Junior Historians for our homeschooled students, to Hands-On History and Hiking Histories, we’ve got something for every history enthusiast – young and old.

Our programs are designed to bring history to life through hands-on activities, first-hand observations, and interactive discussions. This season, we’re diving into lots of exciting new topics and we can’t wait to explore them with you!

Volunteer

The AHFP is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with gardening, living history demonstrations, and interpretive programs. Whether you have a love for plants or a passion for history, there’s a place for you to get involved! Volunteers help create engaging, hands-on experiences that bring history and nature to life for visitors of all ages. Join the team and make a meaningful contribution to the community in a fun and welcoming environment!

Friends of the Agricultural History Farm Park

The Friends play a vital role in advancing the mission of the AHFP by supporting park staff and enhancing the park system through meaningful volunteer partnerships. In recent years, they have contributed over 88,000 hours of service annually. Montgomery Parks is incredibly grateful for this generous community support, which helps preserve and enrich the farm park for all to enjoy. The Friends also offer engaging programs and historical farm life demonstrations that highlight agriculture and local heritage.

Community Use of Park Space

The park space at the Agricultural History Farm Park is a great place for community gatherings and small group activities! In an effort to avoid interferences between these activities and those being offered by the Farm Park, a permit is required for any group of 10 or more people who wish to use the park space for a planned gathering of any kind. This permit is FREE for groups with less than 50 people.

To obtain a permit, please contact AHFPprograms@montgomeryparks.org.

Please note that permit requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance and are considered at the digression of the Historic Site Manager.

Photography Permits

The Agricultural History Farm Park offers a stunning backdrop for photography! A paid photo permit is required for posed photography sessions, available seven days a week from Sunrise to Sunset.

The University of Maryland Extension Office Building

This building is home to the University of Maryland Extension, the Office of Agriculture, the Montgomery County 4-H & Youth Office, USDA Farm Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Montgomery Soil Conservation District. The UMDE Master Gardeners – Demonstration Garden and the National Capital Dahlia Society Garden are accessible from here.

To reach the UMDE office building, follow the paved entrance road all the way to the parking lots at the end. Please note this building is not open to the public outside of scheduled programs and events.
