Since 1961, Brookside Nature Center has engaged visitors in fun and meaningful ways, connecting to both the natural and cultural resources of Montgomery County. Nestled within 536-acre Wheaton Regional Park, the nature center provides interpretation of the surrounding ecosystems - forest, pond, stream and meadow. The nature center building is accessible to all and features live animal exhibits (reptiles/amphibians/fish), the Children's Discovery Room, observation bee hive, and wildlife exhibits. On the facility grounds, discover a wooded nature play area, native plant gardens, accessible interpretive boardwalks, The Harper 1870s Homestead cabin, and miles of hiking trails. Summer Camps Registration Is Underway at Montgomery Parks!

Montgomery Parks offers fun-filled half- and whole-day summer camps throughout June, July and most of August. NOW AVAILABLE: Maple Sugaring Program (1 hr.)

In this program students learn about the important historical relationship people have with maple trees and follow the production of maple syrup by practicing drilling a tree, observing sap flow, watching the boiling process, and tasting the finished product. Students will learn about the role of sap in the life of a tree as they practice identifying maple trees and learn about the physiology and anatomy of trees.Grade level: K-12

Brookside Nature Center is offering this Maple Sugaring experience for local school groups from January 19 through March 6. Field trips can be scheduled Tuesday-Friday at a rate of $5/student.

Maryland Master Naturalist Training

Master Naturalist LogoStarting in March, 2015, Brookside Nature Center will serve as the host site for the 11 week MN training program which offers approximately 60 hours of broad-based, regional natural history instruction taught by local experts.

Inclement Weather Policy: Brookside Nature Center follows Montgomery County Public School closures, delayed openings and early releases. If MCPS are closed due to inclement weather, all Nature Center children’s programs are cancelled. Adult programs cancellations will be decided on a case by case basis; please call the Nature Center to check on the status of your adult class.
