Earth Day Festival

What better place than Brookside Gardens, M-NCPPC, Montgomery Parks, to celebrate Earth Day? Through volunteering, walks and tours, earth friendly activities and browsing our green craft fair, you can learn while having fun. Interactive family-friendly activities and a “green” vendor and craft fair will be offered from 12noon- 4pm. Enjoy wildlflower and plant walks starting at 12:30pm. Discover how small changes in your everyday habits can make a big impact on improving our environment.

Green crafters welcome! Applications are now being accepted. Please apply by April 6, 2012.

Schedule of Events

  • 9:00am – noon Volunteer Project
    Volunteer for an Earth Day garden project planting shrubs and invasive weed removal near the 40th anniversary grove. All volunteers must preregister; for more information, or to sign up, call 301-962-1429 or email: mcp-gardenvolunteer@montgomeryparks.org. Visit our volunteer webpage.
  • noon - 4:00pm Earth Day Activities
    • Green Craft and Vendor Fair- Visitors Center Auditorium. Join us at our second green craft fair this earth day! Browse craft tables featuring local crafters selling items made from reused, recycled, up-cycled, responsibly harvested, organic, plant related or sustainable products. Our green vendors will demonstrate products or services that help the earth.
    • Earth Day Activities for Children & Families- Children’s Classroom & Gardens
      Grow your own Salad Bowl- Plant lettuce, nurture and watch it grow so you can harvest later this spring for your own tasty mini salad treat.
      Tree Adventure Scavenger Hunt
      Side Walk Chalk- Save paper- draw on the sidewalk!
      Story Time- 1:00pm & 2:30 pm -University of Maryland Entomologist and Author, Mike Raupp will read his children’s book, 26 Things That Bug Me, Children’s Classroom
    • Community Art Project-recycle paper to create decorative flowers. Make one for Brookside Gardens and one to take home. Visitors Center Atrium
  • 12:30- 3:30 pm Walks & Tours
    Meet: Brookside Gardens Visitor Center; No reservations required. All ages
    • 12:30 Wonderfully Wild Flower Walk
      1:30 Remarkable Trees of Brookside
      2:30 Woody Native Trees & Shrubs
      3:30 Beautiful Bulbs of Brookside
  • 3:00- 4:15 pm Movie Screening: Bag It! Bag It has been garnering awards at film festivals across the nation. What started as a documentary about plastic bags evolved into a wholesale investigation into plastics and their effect on our waterways, oceans, and even our bodies. Join the Bag It movement and decide for yourself how plastic your life will be. Adult classroom.
