Brookside Gardens 40th Anniversary

Please plan to join us for some of the many programs and events we have scheduled as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, all identified throughout the Xperience Program Guide with a special 40th Anniversary symbol.

40th Birthday Party, Sunday, July 19
Everyone is invited to Brookside Gardens’ 40th Birthday Bash, where we will celebrate the occasion with birthday cake, family-friendly activities, a dedication ceremony for the 40th Anniversary Grove, and an early evening concert in the Gude Garden. The Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly Exhibit will be FREE this day as our thank you gift to all of our visitors.

Schedule of Events for July 19

  • Wings of Fancy 10am-4pm
  • Cake & punch 1-4pm served in the Visitor Center Atrium
  • The Washington Revels Community Sing in the gardens 1-4pm – see www.revelsdc.org
  • Games, activities, moon-bounce 1-6pm in the gardens
  • Dedication of 40th Anniversary Grove 4:30pm in the Conservatory Parking Area
  • Concert by the Beach Bumz 6:30-8pm in the Gude Garden

Look for colorful 40th Anniversary “Ask Me” buttons, worn by Gardens’ staff and volunteers. We want the public to know it’s our 40th Anniversary and to ask us about all the exciting events we have planned, such as:

  • 40th Anniversary Banners (on display in the Visitors Center Atrium).
    The banners feature Garden images take by staff and some of our 40th Anniversary photo contest winners. Congratulations to Shantida Joseph, Judith MacArthur, Elisa Rice, Peter Rice, Barbara Sangster and Fred Shapiro, whose images are displayed on the banners.
  • The Big 40 Garden
    A colorful welcoming garden in the Visitors Center Parking lot with the number “40” planted in succession with pansies, tulips, annuals, and chrysanthemums throughout the year.
  • Time Line and Memory Wall
    See what happened in the last forty years as the Garden grew, and share your special memories of Brookside Gardens.
  • Garden Interpretation and Displays
    Look for special 40th Anniversary signage that features historical photographs of garden areas, and gardens designed with ruby red flowers honoring our ruby 40th Anniversary.
  • 40th Anniversary Art & Photo Exhibit
    May 23- July 24 Exhibit of original art work by members of the Garden Illustrators Group , and photographs of the Gardens through the year will be on display in the Visitors Center.
  • 40th Anniversary Grove
    This grove of 40 baldcypress trees will be planted near the Conservatories as a permanent commemoration of this milestone in Brookside Gardens’ history.
  • Gardening Guide for the Greater Washington Area
    Book available in fall 2009, features colorful photographs, garden tips organized by month and illustrated with beautiful botanical illustrations and plants of interest.
  • Brookside Gardens 2009 40th Anniversary Calendar is now on sale in the Marylandica Gift Shops!

Winners of the Brookside Gardens 40th Anniversary Photo Contest

We are pleased to announce the winners of the Brookside Gardens 40th Anniversary Photo Contest. Congratulations to the photographers whose work has been selected for use in the Brookside Gardens 2009 40th Anniversary Calendar! The calendar will be available for sale in the Marylandica Gift Shops, beginning September 1, 2008.  In addition, all of the selected images may be used for 40th anniversary merchandise or other Brookside Gardens publications, marketing and promotional materials. Photographers will receive photographic credit if their images are used. We thank all of the photo contest participants (sixty-two photographers submitted 237 photographs) for submitting their beautiful images of the Gardens.
