M-NCPPC recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a ground-breaking ceremony for two large-scale building projects. Both are part of Montgomery County’s Smart Growth Initiative, which provides critically-needed public facilities by leveraging County-owned land.
Spirit to Serve volunteers took on a variety of tasks in Montgomery Parks including building a new trail in Rock Creek Park, protecting new trees in Chevy Chase, planting projects at Brookside Gardens, invasive plant removal at Black Hill Regional Park, and a park clean-up at Long Branch Recreation Center.
After retiring from an IT position in 2000, Mike Robinson chose to pursue his passion—history. He has spent hundreds of hours volunteering as an archaeologist, interpreter, and reenactor at historic sites, and has gained experience he never imagined.
From January 14-16, hundreds of volunteers participated in park and stream cleanups and Weed Warrior events around the county as part of the annual MLK National Day of Service. During MLK weekend, 480 volunteers took part in park and stream cleanups at 11 sites throughout the park system and removed nearly 20,000 pounds of litter, about 1/3 of which was recycled.
Volunteers in Montgomery Parks will join thousands of people across the country honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service by making MLK Day a day on and not a day off. Montgomery Parks is set to host multiple volunteer events January 14-16, 2017 in conjunction with the MLK National Day of Service.
