  • Babes in the Park Camp
    A week-long nature camp for young children (ages 2 1/2 -5) with their parent. We'll learn about the natural world through crafts, stories, and hikes. You and your child will go fishing, enjoy a pontoon boat ride, hike in the woods, and use nets in the meadow to catch butterflies and insects.   • Parent & Child Nature Art Camp
    Share nature and art with your child! Together you'll discover the plants and animals of the forest, stream and meadow, and create nature artwork and projects to take home and treasure. Search for wildflowers, stream critters, birds and butterflies, then draw or paint what you find. Visit the streamside beach at Northwest Branch to look for shiny quartz and mica, then use it in your artistic creations. We'll send campers home with an art set so they can continue to explore and create nature art throughout the year.   • Parent & Child Nature Camp
    Have summer camp fun with your child as you explore nature together! Investigate the woods, stream, pond and forest edge to discover and learn about the amazing plants and animals that live there. Bring close-toed shoes and a small towel so that we can go wading when the weather is nice. On Friday we'll finish up the week with a field trip to hunt for fossil whale bone and shark teeth at the Chesapeake Bay. On Friday camp will run from 10:30 - 1:30 and will meet at the fieldtrip site. A parent or caretaker must accompany children (no fee for accompanying adult).

    In this camp we'll use all our senses to make sense of nature. We'll make perfume, taste rocks, walk blindfolded through the woods, look through binoculars and microscopes... all while listening, seeing, touching and smelling to discover natural truths both sublime and surprising. We'll also enlist our sense of humor and look for nature's funny side, and learn how animals use their senses to survive in the wild.   • Going Buggy!
    What bizarre and fantastic creatures lurk in the meadow grasses or crawl through the pond muck or dodge under the stream cobbles? What winged marvels nectar at the garden beds or skitter across the forest floor? Using nets and magnifiers, special brews and perilous pits, we'll seek out the insects around us and learn their stories.     It's 1880, and Laura Ingalls and her family have moved to the shores of Silver Lake in the Dakota Territory. In this very popular camp, we'll try to recreate a week in Laura's prairie life by doing many of the things she did, like brush a horse, meet a country doctor, embroider a handkerchief, go to school, make biscuits and much more. We'll also explore America's story during the late 1800s to find out what life was like beyond the vast prairie. Join us and Laura as we travel back in time to experience our American heritage!   • Naturally Creative
    Explore nature through art, and art though nature, nature crafts, and hikes. We'll go dip netting in the stream, chase insects and butterflies in the meadow and hike through the forest looking and listening for signs of insects, birds and mammals. We'll use different art and craft media to draw, paint and construct our view of nature. Rock art, watercolors, fish art, clay creations, tree crafts, gnome homes and wind streamers... we'll do it all. Plus, we'll give you an art set with four different types of art supplies, so that you can have fun creating nature art all year long.   • Splish, Splash, Drip, Drop
    Come investigate the wonders of water! We'll explore the streams and ponds at Brookside Nature Center, as well as Pine Lake and Northwest Branch to find out how they were formed and who lives there. As junior naturalists we'll scout for frogs, fish, ducks and dragonflies, and learn how to catch, identify and safely release other aquatic critters. We'll hunt for sparkly schist and tiny garnets, and visit a streamside Native American rock shelter, too. As water admirers, we'll create artwork and crafts, and study water with simple scientific tools. Please bring close-toed shoes and a towel so that we can go wading when the weather is nice.

  • Winged Wonders
    Butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, and bees, oh my! This workshop is for adults who'd like to learn (or learn more about) about the spectacular flyers that visit our gardens and call the parks 'home'. For three days we'll immerse ourselves in the world of these amazing pollinators, predators and flying flowers. We'll explore their different life cycles and examine the unique roles they play in nature. Each day will start at the Black Hill Visitor Center, then we'll set out to the various habitat sites to observe and identify a multitude of diverse species. Participants will have access to our library of traditional field guides, and we'll also play with the world of field guide apps available for smartphones and tablets. We'll be outdoors each day (rain or shine), so be prepared! We'll send you a detailed itinerary before the workshop. Van transportation provided for field trips. FOBH $145
