"The Parks Show" Archives

The Parks Show is a Gold Winner of the MarCom Awards in both the 2008 and 2007 competitions and the 2006 and 2004 recipient of the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association's Showcase Award for "Writing, Research or Audio Visual." Now in its 20th year, the show is produced jointly by the Department of Parks and the Montgomery County Council. Cathy Grubman is the producer and writer while Kelli Holsendolph, media relations manager for the Parks Department, is the host of the program.

The Parks Show is a regularly scheduled 15-minute presentation addressing the Montgomery County Park System and its multiple and varied features. It airs on County Cable Montgomery, Channel 6, or as a live streaming video and/or audio via the Montgomery County Government Web site.

Give the Gift of Parks!

Meet Tin-Mala, in charge of gift-giving and the Parks memorial bench and tree program. She'll explain how individuals or groups can put the Parks Department on their holiday list. We'll also explore the holiday happenings at the Parks Department such as Garden of Lights, Christmas on the Farm, and Ice Skating Extravaganzas!

The Three B's: Bees, Beavers and Bears!

By learning about these animals, we will explore the local wildlife populations here in Montgomery Parks. Meet Bill Hamilton, wildlife ecologist, who is managing both deer and beaver populations. We also meet Barry Thompson, a local beekeeper.

Emancipation Day

The Parks Department celebrates Maryland's Emancipation Day with programs, events and lectures. Get a sneak peak at Oakley Cabin with historian Susan Soderberg. And then meet Shirl Spicer, the new museum manager for the Parks, at the newly acquired Josiah Henson site. And finally, host Kelli Holsendolph and her friend Mike take the self-guided Underground Railroad hike at Woodlawn Manor.

How a Park is Born

Learn how a park goes from initial concept…. to swingset! Host Kelli Holsendolph meets with park planner Brooke Farquhar at Battery Urban Park in Bethesda. Then she goes upcounty to Flower Valley Local Park, which has just undergone a playground renovation. Architect Kathy Dearstine explains the program. We meet the kids at Cabin John Playground as well.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Go behind the scenes as the ParkStar host Reuben Jacobson interviews teens who worked for the Parks Dept. over the summer. He interviews a lifeguard at the Splash Park, the boat manager at Lake Needwood, a snack shop manager at Lake Needwood, a train engineer at Cabin John, an ice skating teacher, and two volunteers at the Butterfly Show at Brookside. He also reflects on what it’s like being a TV host!

Parks and Rec Month

ParkStar host Reuben Jacobson determines the best places in the parks for kids and teens. He visits Cabin John Regional Park (baseball stadium, playground and trails); South Germantown Park's Splash Park and Mini-Golf; the Wheaton Carousel and Miniature train; and Lake Needwood, where he rents a rowboat, kayak and canoe, as well as gets a lesson in baiting a hook!

Par for the Course?

Check out old-school Par Exercise Courses, which are still a popular part of Montgomery Parks. We'll also meet up with Lt. Karen Petrarca of the Park Police, who discusses trail safety along the Capital Crescent Trail. And Joel Carrier of the MC Road Runners Club regarding an upcoming Cross-Country event being held at the Ag History Farm Park. The Park Star winner will also be announced!
