National Public Lands Day Events

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants planted over 1.6 million trees nationwide. Join us for the 16th annual National Public Lands Day! Trails

  • Trail Workday at Rock Creek Regional Park 9am-1pm
    Meet at Meadowside Nature Center - 5100 Meadowside Lane (Rock Creek Regional Park), Rockville, MD 20855 - map
    We'll be installing some signposts at trail intersections, correcting trail blazes, doing some tread maintenance with hand tools, and other various tasks. Minimum age of volunteers: 14.

Invasive Plant Removal

  • Underground Railroad Trail at Woodlawn Mansion 10 AM – 12 Noon.
    Meet at 10 AM in the parking lot behind Woodlawn Manor at 16501 Norwood Road. - map
    The Underground Railroad Trail (formerly the Rural Legacy Trail) commemorates the involvement of Montgomery County residents in the Underground Railroad and celebrates the Quaker heritage in Sandy Spring. Invasive plants, which were not part of the historical landscape, are now impacting the native vegetation along this trail. Join Montgomery County Parks Certified Weed Warrior, Jeremy Arling, and Montgomery County Sierra Club as we manually remove invasive plants along the Underground Railroad Trail.
  • Little Falls Stream Valley Park 8 – 10 AM.
    Meet at 8 AM at the gravel parking lot at the intersection of Little Falls Parkway and Massachusetts Ave. - map
    Little Falls Stream Valley Park is home to many large native trees. Paralleling the Capital Crescent Trail, the park is a treasure that is loved and enjoyed by many local residents. Join Little Falls Watershed Alliance and Montgomery County Certified Weed Warrior Supervisors, Lynnwood Andrews and Suzanne Richman, to manually remove invasive vines.
  • Rachel Carson Conservation Park 9 AM – 12
    Meet at 9 AM at the gravel parking lot at off Zion Road – 22201 Zion Road, Brookeville, MD 20833 - map
    Rachel Carson Conservation Park is one of the county's premier conservation areas. The beautiful Hawlings River meanders through the park, and more than 6 miles of natural surface trail make discovering the natural areas in this park easy. Unfortunately the park’s native trees and plants are threatened by invasive plants. Join Montgomery County Park Certified Weed Warrior Supervisor, David Fryauff, as we manually remove small invasive vines before they impact the native trees.
  • Capital Crescent Trail 10:15 AM – 12 Noon
    Meet at 10:15 AM at the gravel parking lot at the intersection of Little Falls Parkway and Massachusetts Ave. - map
    This well loved trail is lined by large, stately trees that need to be protected from the invasive vines surrounding them. Join Certified Weed Warrior David Brooks as we manually remove invasive plants.
  • Cabin John Regional Park Campground Time 8 – 10 AM
    Meet at the gravel parking lot to the Robert C. McDonnell Campground – (aka Camp Tuckerman) at 7701 Tuckerman Lane, Rockville, MD 20854- map
    Cabin John–Robert C McDonnell Campground is a quiet treasure that offers wetlands, meadows, beautiful woodlands, Cabin John stream, and unfortunately, an expanding coverage of invasive vines. Join Montgomery County Parks Certified Weed Warrior, Rob Ellett, as we manually remove invasive plants to help save the majestic mature trees of Cabin John–Robert C. McDonnell Campground area.
