Historian Anthony Cohen gets Maryland Emancipation Day started a day early with his special night hike of the Underground Railroad Experience Trail. Interpretative materials are appropriate for children ages 8 and up; no dogs will be allowed along this guided hike, except for therapy animals; dress for the weather; and, bring your flashlight. Parking: Available at Woodlawn Manor. Registration is required for this event, tickets will not be available onsite. Free events to celebrate Emancipation Day!

On November 1, 1864, Maryland freed by a new state constitution all those held in bondage within its boundaries. Celebrate the freedom from enslavement in Maryland with a hike on the Underground Railroad, a tour of a slave cabin and a museum on slavery, living history demonstrations and great food! All activities are FREE.

Hikes begin at 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am and 12:00 noon.
Trained Underground Railroad Trail Guides will lead interpretive hikes of the 2 mile trail from Woodlawn Manor to the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House. Parking: Available at Woodlawn Manor. At the end of each hike, shuttle buses will transport hikers from Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House back to the Woodlawn Manor parking lot between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, call 301-650-4373 or visit www.UndergroundRRExperience.org

The museum and art gallery will be open to visitors FREE of charge for Emancipation Day. Lunch will be available for purchase by Ribs on the Run. Special activities at the museum include: 11:00 - 11:30 am – View a video performance by actress Gwendolyn Briley-Strand as Harriet Tubman; 12:00 - 1:00 pm – Live performance and narration by Gwendolyn Briley-Strand as Rosa Parks; and 2:00 - 2:30 pm – Live performance by the All Natural African Dance Troupe.

From the 495 Beltway, take New Hampshire Avenue exit North. Continue 11.5 miles on New Hampshire Avenue crossing Routes 198 and 108. Go 1 mile. SLOW DOWN. Make a left onto Brooke Road. Go 1 mile. The historic Odd Fellows Lodge on Route 108 will be open to visitors free of charge. Directions: From the 495 Beltway, take New Hampshire Avenue exit North. Continue 11.5 miles on New Hampshire Avenue and turn left onto Route 108 (Olney-Sandy Spring Road). The lodge is located next door to the Sharp Street Church.

The Maryland Emancipation Day Program
at Oakley Cabin will include guided cabin tours, a traditional foodways demonstrations by culinary historian, Michael Twitty and historical re enactor, Anita Henderson, refreshments, spiritual readings and songs, archaeology digs, a keynote address by Dr. Cheryl LaRoche, lecturer, Underground Railroad scholar, professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland at College Park and Georgetown University; and lots of hands-on activities for children. Parking: Available only at the Longwood Recreation Center, 19300 Georgia Avenue. Inclement weather: Emancipation Day activities planned for Oakley Cabin will take place at the Longwood Community Center, located within the Longwoord Local Park, in the event of extreme inclement weather.
