Archaeology Summer Workshops & Fieldschools
Montgomery County Department of Parks offers children and adults the opportunity to participate in the rewarding experience of discovering our human past through archaeology. Participants in our summer workshops and fieldschools work side-by-side with the Park archaeologists.
Children's workshops are offered to students aged 9 to 13 years; adult field schools are offered to those 16 years and older.
Workshops are generally one week in length and include instruction in excavation and laboratory techniques, field trips, and fun projects. Participants can expect to assist the Park archaeologists in the excavation and study of one of our many archaeological sites in Montgomery County.

Leader Training Workshop for Teens
June 21 - 25

Needwood Mansion, 6700 Needwood Road, Derwood, MD 20855
Learn how to become an awesome camp counselor and leader in this five-day workshop. Participants will receive CPR training, learn the basics of archaeological methods, and practice creating and planning workshop activities. This one week class meets daily at Needwood Mansion.

Summer Workshops for Kids

Get a hands-on introduction to archaeology. You will dig it! Work side-byside with Park archaeologists on a real-live archaeological site, and do what archaeologists do. Each workshop meets at Needwood Mansion.

Extended Care for Archaeology Workshop

Kids can practice their atlatl skills (a prehistoric hunting weapon), go on a scavenger hunt, take a paddleboat ride on Lake Needwood, play a board game and more during this supervised free time following the day-long archaeology workshop.
